Seoul, starts selling ‘climate cards’ for eco-friendly transportation innovation!
In 2023, the French National Academy of Technology talked about moderation. Technology and innovation alone will not be enough to meet climate change targets by 2030, so personal moderation is the key to beating the climate crisis.
“We need as many electric vehicles as possible, we need the discipline of individuals and groups to leave their cars behind and use public transportation,” said Denis Ranque, president of the French National Academy of Technology.
But without active government policies, telling people to take public transportation is likely to be an unanswered cry.
This requires a foundation of public transportation pricing and efficient operations.
That’s why Seoul, the capital of South Korea, is launching an eco-friendly transportation innovation pass that adapts to climate and transportation changes. This Card is named ‘Climate Card’.
The Seoul Metropolitan Government said it will sell physical climate companion cards at customer safety rooms on Seoul Metro Lines 1 through 8, and at convenience stores near Line 9, Ui-Sinsul Line, and Shinlim Line stations from the 23rd.
The Climate Card costs 60,000 won per month and allows users to ride the Seoul subway, buses, and Seoul Bicycle-Ttareungi for 30 days. It is divided into 62,000 won and 65,000 won per month depending on whether you use Ttareungi or not.
Those who use public transportation more than 40 times a month can save money. Before the expiration of the usage period (within 30 days from the start date), you can get a refund of the balance except for a 500 won fee.
However, there is a limitation that you cannot use the ID Line, subways outside of Seoul, wide-area and airport buses, or licensed buses in other regions. For example, if you get off at Seoul Station on Subway Line 4 and get off at Indeokwon (Gyeonggi), you will have to pay a separate fee to the station staff because the Climate Card will not work.
Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon attended a joint press conference, saying, “We expect the launch of the Climate Card to improve transportation convenience for citizens, while also responding to the climate crisis and easing household burdens.”
